Allen was born on March 12th, 1781. Allen's father was Thomas Cotton and his mother was Priscilla Knight. His maternal grandparents were James Knight and Priscilla Carter. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Moore, Noah, John, Alexander, Arthur, Mary, Talitha, Elizabeth and Sarah.-
