Tabitha was born about 1794 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Tabitha's father was James J. Charles and her mother was Tabitha Senter. Her paternal grandparents were James Charles and Sarah; her maternal grandparents were Stephen Senter and Susannah Tandy. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named James, Oliver, Hiram, Stephen K., John, Joel, Solomon, Cynthia, Susannah, Nancy and Elizabeth. She was the second youngest of the twelve children.-
