Bessie was born on June 13th, 1888 in , Effingham, Illinois. Bessie's father was Samuel Benton Chambers and her mother was Sarah Ann Tipsword. Her paternal grandparents were William Chambers and Amy Sealock; her maternal grandparents were Griffin Tipsword and Elizabeth Banning. She had two brothers named Leroy and Corry Albert. She was the youngest of the three children. She had five half-brothers and a half-sister, named Leroy, Owen Leslie, Cecil J., Jenning Bryan, Isaiah Don and Laura Mabelle.-
