William R. was born in 1843 in Tennessee. William R.'s father was William C. Cato and his mother was Jane Peebles. His paternal grandparents were Roland Cato and Nancy Vincent. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Thomas C., Robert, Nancy and Mary Ann. He was the oldest of the five children.-
