His paternal grandparents were William Bussell and Sarah Wyatt. He had six brothers and three sisters, named George W., James M., Calvin P., Benjamin Sanford, Burwell White, Absalom Tivis, Virinda Jane, Sarah Ann and Mary Ann. He was the fourth oldest of the ten children.-
