Martha was born in 1772 in Halifax, NC. Martha's father was Robert Brantley and her mother was Sarah Rorie. Her paternal grandparents were Edward Brantley and Martha Pitman; her maternal grandfather was John Rorie. She had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Thomas, Elizabeth, Sarah and Jane. She had three half-brothers and a half-sister, named James, John, William and Nancy.-
