Martha was born on October 10th, 1782 in Halifax, North Carolina. Martha's father was Henry Bradford and her mother was Sara Crowell. Her paternal grandparents were John Bradford Jr. and Patience Reed; her maternal grandparents were Edward Crowell and Martha. She had six brothers and three sisters, named Nathaniel, John, Thomas, Henry, Edward, Richard Henry, Elizabeth, Mary Crowell and Sarah. She was the oldest of the ten children.-
