Mary Kane was born in 1837 in Of, Hancock, Tennessee. Mary Kane's father was Jesse Bowen and her mother was Sarah H. Durham. Her paternal grandparents were Reuben Bowen and Sarah R. Hicks. She had four brothers and five sisters, named Jason Yeoman, Enoch Smyth, William Harmon, John Patton, Flavilla, Johana Caroline, Sylvania C., Elizabeth and Eboline. She was the third oldest of the ten children.
