John Patton was born in 1849 in Of, Hancock, Tennessee. John Patton's father was Jesse Bowen and his mother was Sarah H. Durham. His paternal grandparents were Reuben Bowen and Sarah R. Hicks. He had three brothers and six sisters, named Jason Yeoman, Enoch Smyth, William Harmon, Flavilla, Mary Kane, Johana Caroline, Sylvania C., Elizabeth and Eboline. He was the second youngest of the ten children.
