Harriet was born in 1837 in Shawhan, Bourbon, Kentucky. Harriet's father was Benjamin Bowen and her mother was Mary Current. Her maternal grandparents were John Current and Elizabeth Amos. She had two brothers and two sisters, named George W., Henry Clay, Mary Current and Elizabeth. She was the second oldest of the five children.-
