George W. was born on October 18th, 1828 in Shawhan, Bourbon, Kentucky. George W.'s father was Benjamin Bowen and his mother was Mary Current. His maternal grandparents were John Current and Elizabeth Amos. He had a brother and three sisters, named Henry Clay, Harriet, Mary Current and Elizabeth. He was the oldest of the five children.-
