Thomas was born in 1850 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Thomas' father was Christian Bloomer and his mother was Elizabeth Mitchell. His paternal grandparents were Isaac Bloomer and Nancy; his maternal grandparents were John J. Mitchell and Martha Lyons. He had four brothers named Perry, John, Henderson and Charles. He was the oldest of the five children.-
