Whitmel's father was Joshua Bell and his mother was Pheraby Norfleet. His paternal grandparents were William Bell and Ann Jones; his maternal grandparents were Thomas Norfleet III and Ruth. He had eight brothers and three sisters, named Joshua, Thomas, William, Arthur, Benjamin, Bythel, Frederick, Joseph, Reason, Absilla and Ferabee.-
