Bennett Hilliard was born in 1811 in , , NC. Bennett Hilliard's father was William Barrow and his mother was Phereby Hilliard. His paternal grandparents were William Barrow and Olivia Ruffin; his maternal grandparents were Robert Hilliard and Mary McKeithan. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Robert Hilliard, William Ruffin, Bennett, James, Nancy Ruffin, Martha Hilliard and Eliza Eleanor. He was the third youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 43 in 1854.-
