Margaret was born in 1838 in , Hawkins, Tennessee. Margaret's father was Thomas Amis and her mother was Sarah. Her paternal grandparents were Lincoln Amis and Ann Nicholson. She had two brothers and a sister, named James B., Thomas and Eliza. She was the second oldest of the four children.-
