Rebecca was born in 1802 in , Rutherford, NC. Rebecca's father was William Walkup and her mother was Hannah Oliver. Her paternal grandparents were James Alexander Walkup and Margaret Nancy Pickens. She had a brother and six sisters, named James, Caroline, Jane, Margaret, Eliza, Nancy and Martha. She was the fourth youngest of the eight children.-
