Eliza was born in 1803 in , Rutherford, NC. Eliza's father was William Walkup and her mother was Hannah Oliver. Her paternal grandparents were James Alexander Walkup and Margaret Nancy Pickens. She had a brother and six sisters, named James, Caroline, Jane, Margaret, Rebecca, Nancy and Martha. She was the third youngest of the eight children.-
