Robert was born about 1838.  Robert's father was Gilbert Schoonover and his mother was Jane Shoemaker. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Benjamin, Thomas, William, Catherine, Julia, Levina, Amanda and Lorin.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.
