Benjamin was born about 1831.  Benjamin's father was Gilbert Schoonover and his mother was Jane Shoemaker. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Thomas, Robert, William, Catherine, Julia, Levina, Amanda and Lorin.  He was the oldest of the nine children.
