Sara Jane was born on March 12th, 1840 in , Cape May, NJ.1 Sara Jane's father was David Gandy and her mother was Maria Bishop. Her paternal grandparents were David Gandy and Phebe Godfrey; her maternal grandparents were Gideon Bishop and Mary McCarty. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John Wesley, David, Gideon, John Wesley, Matilda, Emma and Lucy. She was the third oldest of the eight children.-
