David was born on July 9th, 1843 in , Cape May, NJ.1 David's father was David Gandy and his mother was Maria Bishop. His paternal grandparents were David Gandy and Phebe Godfrey; his maternal grandparents were Gideon Bishop and Mary McCarty. He had three brothers and four sisters, named John Wesley, Gideon, John Wesley, Matilda, Sara Jane, Emma and Lucy. He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.-
