  • 2. TIMOTHY3 ALLEN (TIMOTHY2, SAMUEL1)1,2,3 was born August 31, 1715 in Norwich, New London, CT, and died January 12, 1806 in Chesterfield, Hampshire, MA. He married (1) MARY BISHOP, daughter of JOHN BISHOP and MARY BINGHAM. He married (2) DOROTHY GALLUP4,5 January 06, 1761 in Ashford, CT, daughter of JOHN GALLUP and ELIZABETH WHEELER.
    
    Notes for TIMOTHY ALLEN:
    He united with the church when 15 years old; graduated at Yale college, 1736, and the Theological Seminary; was ordained at West Haven, 1738.
    Note.--Mr. Allen was dismissed in West Haven, 1742, and he went to New London. He preached in New London for some time. In the time of Rev. George Whitefield, he was a zealous preacher, and a co-laborer with him in the great Reformation. He presided over a transient school called the "Shepherd's Tent", in New London, for the purpose of educating men for the ministry in the separate churches. We find in an old pamphlet, a sermon published, dated 1765, entitled "Answer to Pilate's question, What is truth? John, xviii; 38 By Timothy Allen, A. M.D.V.M." He was settled in Ashford, CT 1761, and afterwards in Chesterfield MA "Allen and Witter Families" by Asa W. Allen, p. 109.
    
    According to The History and Genealogy of the Families of Chesterfield, MA, by Baker, Ruth, Gazette Printing Co. Northampton, MA 1962:
    
    Rev. Timothy Allen Family
    Rev Timothy Allen graduated at Yale in 1736; was pastor of the church in Orange (State? perhaps NJ) from 1738-1742 and of Ashford, CT, 1751-1765. He was the thrid minister of the Chesterfield Congregational Church from 1785-1796; came from Granville, (State?) in 1784. He m (1) Mary Bishop. She died 1757. He m. (2) Mary, daughter of Joseph and Rebecca (Fuller) Allen of Scotland Parish, in Windham, by whom he had one son. He m. (3) Dorothy (Gallop) Read. Madority Allen, consort of Rev. Timothy allen, died in Chesterfield 3 Sep 1804. He died in Chesterfield 12 Jan 1806 age 91. His will, recorded in Northampton, names four children.
    
    1. Theodamy, wife of Spencer Phelps. She was born in New Jersey.
    2. Harmony, wife of Allerton Cushman.
    3. Fanely, wife of Gaius Gardiner
    4. Evangely, deceased daughter, wife of ...... Booth.
    
    There is some thought that Timothy Allen married Mary Allen and Mary Burnham. On page 47 of the third book of Early Connecticut Marriages in the town of Scotland, CT Timothy Allen and Mary Allen married Oct 6, 1772. Mary was the daughter of Joseph Allen, half brother to Timothy Allen, SR. Mary was born November 24, 1736 about 21 years younger than Rev. Timothy. In the book Allen and Whitter Families by Asa W. Allen on page 118," Mary Allen, daughter of Joseph, born 1736 married Timothy Allen of Ashford and had one child--Ephraim."
    
    Again, in the book of Early Connecticut Marriages mentioned above on page 49 in the town of Scotland, CT Timothy Allen marries Mary Burnham Sep 11, 1780. Rev. Timothy Allen, Jr. is usually metioned as Rev. These two Marys could have been the wife of Rev. Timothy--but there could have been other Timothys in that area of Connecticut. More research needs to be done to prove one way or another if these two Marys married Rev. Timothy.
    
    Rev. Timothy Allen was a resident of Ashford, CT when he married Mrs. Dorothy (--?--) Reed 6 January 1761.
    
    Rev. Timothy Allen's daughter, Harmony, was married 2 June 1761 and she was of Coventry, CT
