Her paternal grandparents were Fredrik Andries Georg van Blerk and Henrina Magdalena Mynhardt (van Blerk); her maternal grandparents were Johannes Paulas Soekoe and Maria Elizabeth Magdalena Smit (Soekoe). She had two brothers and four sisters, named Frederick Andries George, Frederick Johannes, Hendrina Magdalena, Anna Catharina Philippina, Maria Elizabeth Magdalena and Frederika Johanna.
