John was born on May 18th, 1798.  John's father was Benjamin Spinney and his mother was Marth Newhall.  His paternal grandparents were John Spinney and Grace Bowden; his maternal grandparents are William Newhall and Martha Mansfield. He had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Benjamin, Francis, Charles, Martha, Susan and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.  He died after 1870.
