John was born in 1850.  John's father was John Harmon and his mother was Ann E. Spinney.  His maternal grandparents were Ebenezer Spinney and Temperance A. Hodgeson. He had seven brothers and five sisters, named Charles, Frank, Simon, Edward, William, Wallace, Frank, Eliza, Celia, Lillian, Mary and Mary.  He was the oldest of the thirteen children.
