Jeremiah Dow

  • Jeremiah, yeoman of Hampton, New Hampshire, bought on July 6, 1770, land next east of the parade of Northwood Center, then Nottingham, and lived on it until January 11, 1773, when he sold it to Valentine Keniston. Probably then moved to Kensington, New Hampshire. He was 52 at the outbreak of the war, but, like many others of similar age, enlisted promptly for the defense of the coastal towns. It is impossible to determine positively the identities of the four or five Jeremiahs who fought, but it was surely he who, with John Dow and Richard Dow, was in Captain Elkins' company for the defense of Portsmouth, unable to write, signing "his mark". Only possibly was he the Jeremiah who enlisted in July of 1775 under Captain Henry Dearborn and Colonel John Stark, or who was in Captain Abraham Drake's militia, receipting on December 1, 1777 for three pounds and ten shillings.
