This he did in 1850, but the headship of the family in the male line went to Robert Waring Darwin, Charles Darwin's father, from 7th December 1847 until his death on 13th November 1848. It then went to Charles' elder and bachelor brother, Erasmus Alvey, until his death on 26th August 1881. Charles himself held it briefly until his death on 19th April 1882, when it went to his eldest son, William Erasmus, who was married but had no children. On his death in 1914 it went, not to his brother, Sir George who had died in 1912, but to the latter's son, Sir Charles. 1860 - 1928 Eleanor Agnes Noel 68 68 1858 - 1923 Matilda Catherine Noel 65 65  Colonel John Charles Griffith married Matilda  on 19 September 1893.1 He died on 11 November 1934.
     Colonel John Charles Griffith gained the rank of Colonel in the service of the 2nd Volunteer Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment.1 He was decorated with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers' Decoration (V.D.). He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.). He lived at Deanwood House, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire.

(William's father was William Alvey Darwin (1726-1783) who was the  brother of Charles Darwin's father, Robert Waring Darwin).  (three children) D. 1869 Cecil Edward Berkeley Noel D. 1887 Anne Noel Noel She married Colonel Thomas Hamilton Forsyth on 5 August 1873. 1849 - 1923 William Frederick Noel Noel 74 74 Lieutenant Edward William Middleton Noel was born on 18 March 1880. He was the son of Colonel William Frederick Noel Noel and Josephine Annie Hallewell. He died on 19 May 1900 at age 20 at Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa.
     Lieutenant Edward William Middleton Noel fought in the Boer War. He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the 2nd Battalion, Gloucester Regiment.
1852 - 1925 Francis Charles Methuen Noel 73 73  Admiral Francis Charles Methuen Noel was invested as a Fellow, Royal Geographical Society (F.R.G.S.) 1855 - 1935 Robert Lascelles Gambier Noel 80 80 Captain Robert Lascelles Gambier Noel gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Navy.

He married Letitia Louisa Carmela Koelle, daughter of Reverend S. W. Koelle, on 23 March 1887.
1861 - 1932 James Wriothesley Noel 70 70 gained the rank of Lieutenant in the service of the Wiltshire Militia.

He married Elizabeth Marion Willis, daughter of General Frederic Arthur Willis, on 8 March 1890.

Darwin Edward Noel was born on 30 March 189 the son of James and Elizabeth. He died on 25 April 1972 at age 81, unmarried.  Darwin fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches. He gained the rank of Captain in the service of the Royal Artillery.
