Margaret was born on June 18th, 1820.  Margaret's father was David Breckinridge and her mother was Charlotte McMillan.  Her paternal grandparents were Andrew Breckenridge and Elizabeth Ferguson; her maternal grandparents were Neil MacMillan and Isabell McConochy. She had seven brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, Andrew, Neil, David, Duncan, John, Charles, Isabell, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Charlotte.  She was the eighth oldest of the twelve children.
