Ann was born in August 1869 in Arula, Veski.  Ann's father was Rein Volmer and her mother was Katre Volmer (Kikkas).  Her paternal grandmother was Anu Volmer; her maternal grandparents were Peeter Kikkas and Ann Kikkas (Jürgenson). She had two brothers and four sisters, named Juhan, Jaan, Liis, Eva, Mari and Epp.  She was the youngest of the seven children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named August and Melanie.
