Mats' father was Toomas and his mother was Epp. His paternal grandfather is Mats and his paternal grandmother was Mai. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Mikk, Jaan, Andres, Paap, Ann, Els and Mai. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Mihkel, Liis and Katri.
