Charles was born in March 1894.  Charles' father was Detlef Hans Thiering and his mother was Emilie Oldenburg.  His paternal grandparents were Hans Thiering and Catherina Horn. He had a brother and three sisters, named Lawrence, Clara, Sophia and <Unknown>.  He was the oldest of the five children.
