Detlef was born on May 1st, 1850 in Holstein, Németország.1   Detlef's father was Hans Thiering and his mother was Catherina Horn. He had three brothers named Bernard, Fred and Carl.  He was the youngest of the four children.  He died at the age of 86 on December 24th, 1936 in Devenport, Iowa, US.
