János' father was István and his mother was Erzsébet.  His paternal grandparents were István II. and Judit. He had four brothers and five sisters, named István, Ferenc, József, Sámuel, Sára, Erzsébet, Erzsébet, Judit and Zsuzsanna.  He was the fourth youngest of the ten children.
