Jan was born on July 1st, 1849.  Jan's father was George Siman and his mother was Maria Roshan.  His paternal grandparents were George Siman and Helena Terek; his maternal grandparents are Andrew Roshan and Anna Kubanda. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Andrew, Karl, Joseph, Anna, Maria and Christina.  He was the oldest of the seven children.
