Joseph Antonio was born on August 13th, 1678 in Azpeitia, Guipuzcoa, España.  Joseph Antonio's father is Francisco Ignacio De Emparan y Eycaga and his mother is Catalina De Azcue y Zaulaíca.  His paternal grandfather was Ygnacio De Emparan y Sorarrain and his paternal grandmother is Ana Eycaga y Olano; his maternal grandparents are Joanes De Azcue Urbieta and Mariana De Zaulaíca Mendizaval. He had six brothers named Joseph Joachin, Ygnacio, Francisco Joseph, Joseph Joachin Antonio, Sevastian Joseph and Antonio Joseph Leon.  He is the fourth oldest of the seven children. He has a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Ygnacio, Teressa and Josepha.
