Kathinka was born in 1824. Kathinka's father was Wilhelm Karl Haynau, von and her mother was Elisabeth Trott zu Solz, von. Her paternal grandparents were Wilhelm I. (IX.) Hesse-Cassel, von and Rosa Dorothea Ritter. She had two sisters named Luise and Charlotte. She was the youngest of the three children. She had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Eduard, Gustav, Agnes and Emilie. She died at the age of 42 in 1866.
