Jan III. was born in 1450.  Jan III.'s father was Matyáš Dobrzenský z Dobrzenicz and his mother was Žofka.  His paternal grandfather was Jan II. Dobrzenský z Dobrzenicz. He had two brothers named Zdislav II. and Petr I..  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 41 in 1491.
