Friedrich August was born in 1734. Friedrich August's father was Christian Augustus Anhalt-Zerbst, von and his mother was Johanna Elisabeth Holstein-Gottorp, von. His paternal grandparents were Johann Ludwig Anhalt-Zerbst, von and Christine Eleonore Zeutsch, von; his maternal grandparents were Christian August Holstein-Gottorp, von and Albertine Friederike Baden-Durlach, von. He had a brother and three sisters, named Wilhelm Christian Friedrich, Jekaterina II. Balshaya (Sofie Auguste Friederike), Auguste and Elisabeth. He was the third oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 59 in 1793.
