August was born in 1697. August's father was Emanuel Lebrecht Anhalt-Köthen, von and his mother was Gisela Agnes Rath, von. His paternal grandparents were Emanuel Anhalt-Köthen, von and Eleonore Stolberg-Wernigerode, von. He had two brothers and three sisters, named August Lebrecht, Leopold, Eleonore Wilhelmine, Gisela Auguste and Christiane Charlotte. He was the third youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 58 in 1755.
