Ratnamala's father was Ram Mohan Rao Medishetty and her mother was Girija Bai (Vallabha) Medishetty.  Her paternal grandparents were Venkata Rathnam Medishetty and Seshamma (Vallabha) Medishetty; her maternal grandparents were Narayana Rao Vallabha and Yashoda Bai (Putta) Vallabha. She has three brothers and a sister, named Prem, Daya Sagar, Vinay Sagar and Usha.  She is the second oldest of the five children.
