Hemalatha's father was Bujinga Rao Sajjala and her mother is Seetha Ramamma (Baake Suryanarayana gaari Kumaarthi, Kakinada).  Her paternal grandparents were Nagaiah Sajjala and Subamma Mallemudi (Ramavara paadu Subbiah gaari Kumaarthi) Sajjala. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Nageshwara Rao, Surya Rao, Sathyanarayana, Bhaskar Rao, Padmavathi (Sajjala), Susheela (Sajjala) and Shakuntala (Sajjala).  She died in 1934.
