James was born in 1765 in Paris, France.  James' father was Hugh Smithson (1st Duke of Northum-berland) and his mother was Elizabeth Keate. He had two half-brothers named Hugh and Algernon.  He died at the age of 64 in 1829 in Genoa, Italy.
