Walter was born in 1172. Walter's father was Hugh de Lacy (Lord of Meath) and his mother was Rohese de Monmouth. His paternal grandparents were Gilbert de Lacy and ???; his maternal grandparents were Gilbert fitzBaderon (Lord of Monmouth) and Rohese de Clare. He was an only child.
