Alexander was born in 1823.  Alexander's father was Louis II of Hesse & by Rhine (Grand Duke) and his mother was Wilhelmine of Baden.  His paternal grandparents were Louis I of (Grand Duke of Hesse) and Louise of Hesse-Darmstadt. He had a brother and a sister, named Charles and Marie.  He was the second oldest of the three known children.  He died at the age of 65 in 1888.
