Phyllis' father was John D'Oyly (Sr.) and her mother was Frances Edmonds. Her paternal grandparents were Thomas D'Oyly and Alice Curzon. She had five brothers and two sisters, named Robert, John, Henry, Thomas, Francis, Dorothy and Elizabeth. She was the third youngest of the eight children.
