Hugh was born in 1854 in Greenock.¹ Hugh's father was John McAusland and his mother was Ann Carline. His paternal grandparents were Hugh McAusland and Grace Herarty???; his maternal grandparents were James?? Carline and Catherine Higgins. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Michael, John, James, Hugh, Patrick, Kate, Mary, Ann and Grace. He was the oldest of the ten children. He died of an unknown cause, Decline, at the age of 8 on May 20th, 1862 in Thomsons Close, Greenock.²
