William's father was George William Frederick York and his mother was Lily Woodward. His maternal grandparents were George Woodward and Emma Fletcher. He had three brothers named George, Leslie and Eric. He was the youngest of the four children. He died at the age of 83 in October 2004 in Birkenhead.²
