Samuel's father was Thomas Woodworth (Woodward) and his mother was Hannah Kemp. His paternal grandparents were Joseph Woodworth and Alice Dobb. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, James, Thomas, Hannah, Jane and Sarah. He was the oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 73 on January 3rd, 1887.²
