William was born in 1828 in Leftwich and his christening took place on November 16th, 1828 in Witton.1 2  William's father was John Winstanley and his mother was Martha Plumb. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, George, Elizabeth, Susan and Martha.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.
