Robert's father was Robert Owen Williams and his mother was Hannah Maria Bennett. His maternal grandparents were Benjamin (Banner) Bennett and Emma Millington. He had four brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Norman, Neville, Geoffrey, Gwendoline, Vera and Ireen. He was the seventh oldest of the eight children. He died at the age of 66 in March 1991 in Connah's Quay.
